Roesner Park Grand Re-Opening October 2!
Please join us on Saturday, October 2 at 10 a.m. as we officially re-open Roesner Park. We expect the park to be completed by that date. The design of the new park is meant to remind us of Midlothian’s roots as a farming community that developed around the railroad. Keeping with that theme, the 2-5 play structure is a train and a ticket booth while the 5-12 structure is a barn and silo. Other amenities at the site are a shelter with train medallions, a walking path, a decorative fence and landscaping.

The redevelopment project was designed by Tod Stanton and Sarah Huth of Design Perspectives of Naperville. The construction was done by Fuerte Systems, Inc of Plainfield. The 5-12 play ground is provided by Gametime and the 2-5 play ground, shelter and site amenities are provided by Little Tykes. We also acknowledge the donation of a picnic table and triple climber by the Olson Family. These pieces have been incorporated into the new play areas.

We are looking for people to donate a memorial bench that will be installed on one of the three concrete pads around the walking path. These benches will be engraved with the name of the donor. If you are interested in purchasing one of these benches, please call the park district at 371-6191. These benches will be sold on a first come, first served basis.

The redevelopment of this property is made possible because of early residents who cared about recreation and made sure that property was set aside for future generations to enjoy. When Midlothian was a young community, American Legion Commander Ken Sidell and Fred Baker convinced developer John Robertson to donate a plot of ground as a play ground. These men then gave the property to the Village of Midlothian in 1928 with the stipulation that it remain a recreational area. In 1963 the Village gave the property known as Springfield Park to the Midlothian Park District. In 1967 the Midlothian Park District changed the name to Laurence Roesner Park in honor of Laurence “Duck” Roesner. Duck Roesner was a Midlothian resident who volunteered his time to maintain Springfield Park. He was also a volunteer fireman for the Village of Midlothian.

We hope you will join us at Roesner Park on Saturday, October 2 at 10 a.m. to recognize our past and celebrate our future!
2010 Counselor of the Year - Alyssa Limanowski
Alyssa Limanowksi has been named the Counselor of the Year for the Midlothian Park District’s 2010 Summer Day Camp. Alyssa was chosen as the “best of the best” based on evaluation and observation by Day Camp Coordinator Kim Dwyer and Co-Coordinator J. D. Kman. The coordinators were pleased with Alyssa’s plans which were varied, interesting, and well executed. She had great rapport with her group and outstanding attendance. Besides her work with her group, Alyssa was willing to fill in for before and after camp care whenever she was needed. “Each of these pieces make a good counselor, put them together and you have the makings of the Counselor of the Year,” said Dwyer.
Alyssa is a resident of Crestwood and a 2009 graduate of Shepard High School. She will be a sophomore at St. Xavier’s this fall where she is majoring in pre-med and biology.
Alyssa will continue her employment with the Midlothian Park District by working the teen dances and teaching special event classes. She will also be the party coordinator for the new Themed Birthday Parties. Congratulation, Alyssa!
Treasure of the Month for August - Mark Hansen
Midlothian Park District Commissioner Tom O’Shea announced that the treasure for the month of August is Mark Hansen. John Fox, a Midlothian resident, nominated Mark and the rest of the maintenance staff by calling to say what a great job they had done cleaning Memorial Park. “The place is white glove clean,” said Fox, “I don’t even want to go in it and mess it up.” The maintenance department was doing additional cleaning in preparation for the community picnic that was held on August 14.
Mark Hansen has worked for the Midlothian Park District as a summer maintenance worker since 2006. He lives in Midlothian with his parents Rick and Karen. He is a graduate of Oak Forest High School and just received his bachelor’s degree in history from Illinois State University. As a seasonal employee, Mark has certainly been a treasure. We value his work ethic and his reliability. Thanks, Mark!
