 | On Saturday, October 25, Bremen Heights Park was officially reopened after a five-month renovation project. The new Bremen Heights Park includes a walking path, a large open space, two storm water ponds with native plants, a lighted parking lot connected to the existing lot, a multi-generational playground with both a 2-5 and 5-12 play area, a new pavilion, and NEOS. The project was designed by Tod Stanton of Design Perspective and constructed by Sunset Paving. Almost 50% of the project cost was funded by a $326,800 grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
State Representative Bob Rita and State Representative Will Davis attended the opening. Both legislators wrote letters of support for the grant. Mayor Tom Murawski, the Village Board, Chief Schavone and members of the police and fire departments also attended. Verna Plowman and Wally Tumpane represented members of the Bremen Heights Civics Club, which donated the property to the Midlothian Park District forty years ago. Local residents who provided their input for the design of the project also attended. The project was officially opened when Joe and Sandy Miller cut the ribbon on the pavilion that was named in honor of their son, Captain Adam E. Miller, USMC; who gave his life while serving in the Marines.
“This park represents two years of planning and development,” commented Mike Kohlstedt, President of the Midlothian Park District Board of Commissioners, “we believe it will serve the recreation needs of our residents for many years to come. We are proud to officially re-open Bremen Heights Park.”

 | The Midlothian Park District is planning for your future. The result of the recently adopted District’s Comprehensive Park and Recreation Master has identified major capital needs to improve the Village’s quality of life that cannot be met without voter approval. The Park District is considering a ballot question for a community referendum in April 2009. Three primary projects that were identified in the master plan included significant improvements and expansion to the Don Preston Recreation Center, renovations to Splish-Splash Pool and improvements to Memorial Park. The referendum would also include some level of renovations to all of the other parks in the Park District. The goal is to touch as many people as possible within the overall cost of the referendum to provide opportunities for everyone to benefit from the modest tax increase from each household.
The first of two meetings will be held on Thursday, October 9th at 7 pm at the Don Preston Recreation Center. This meeting will be focused on listening to resident’s ideas about the projects as well as sharing preliminary information on a recent community wide survey mailed out to a random sample of 2000 households in Midlothian. The second meeting will be held on Thursday, October 30th at 7 pm at the Don Preston Recreation Center and will showcase design concepts for the 3 primary projects.
The Naperville based consulting firm of Design Perspectives, Inc. will be leading these projects with the primary goal of providing guidance to the Park District on what the referendum should look like in terms of project design based on multiple layers of public feedback.
According to Tod J. Stanton, President of Design Perspectives, Inc. “the residents of the Midlothian Park District have a chance to chart a course for the next thirty years with improvements to the legacy of what the community had aspired to years ago. With respect to the past, we can build for a better future.” With this in mind, please come out to attend these upcoming meetings and let the Park District hear from you.
